You may have noticed a change in how you make your Blackboard course available to students.
If you are on the “Course” page in Blackboard, and you click on the “OPEN” or “CLOSED” button, you are directed to the course where you can manage the course availability.
Original Interface
- From the courses page, click on the three dots to the far right of the course name and set your course to “Make Course Private” and then the “Open Course” link.
- From the course site, click on “Customization” in the Control Panel, and then “Properties”. From there, under “Set Availability”, select “Yes” and then click the “Submit” button at the bottom of the page
Ultra Interface
- From the Courses page, if the course is closed to students, you can click the three dots to the right of the name and click the Course Settings button to open the Settings where you can make your site available.
- From inside of the course site, in the upper right-corner of the page, you will see a button that either says "OPEN" or "CLOSED." "CLOSED" means the site is unavailable to students." To change the status, click directly on the button.
What is perhaps less intuitive is that the option to "Open" the site or make it available to students, is found under the heading "Close Course."

There is a third option called "Complete Course." This option is used when a course ends. It allows you to leave the course visible, but neither you nor the students can make any changes.
