NOTE: This article is about Blackboard Ultra. For instructions on changing course availability in Original, see this article

You may have noticed a change in how you make your course available to students. In the upper right-corner of the page, you will see a button that either says OPEN...

The gear icon, followed by the text "Course Settings" and a white button with blue text that says OPEN

 or CLOSED.

CLOSED means the site is unavailable to students, but instructors will still be able to work on it.

To change the status, click directly on the button to open the Course Settings page.

You will see a number of course settings on this page. What is perhaps less intuitive is that to open the site (make it available to students), you need to look under the heading Close Course.

In this image, the site is available to students.

The Close Course option, with a gray toggle button that is turned off. Text says "Course content will be unavailable to students. When the course is closed, it continues to appear in the course listing but students cannot access it."

There is a third option called Complete Course. This option is used when a course ends. It allows you to leave the course visible, but neither you nor the students can make any changes.

If the label on your course on the Courses page doesn't change after you change the setting, refresh the Courses page.
